In the past the Korean scientific community resisted working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been campaigning to get rid of textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which can lead to variations in genes or entire genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. This differential reproduction can eventually lead to the creation and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed in both science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living organisms develop traits that enhance their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. Over time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in a population. Such a variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the notion that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestral bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the foundations of biology and helps scientists understand how living things work and grow. It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology does not conflict with religious beliefs as it only deals with physical objects, events, and processes.
In fact many religious individuals have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans share an ancestral lineage with other animals.
It is essential for scientists to advocate for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in some countries around the globe there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. While these are disturbing changes, it's important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief are diverse. What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. Although Creationists may not all be Christian, they are a majority. Creationists are typically divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most well-known type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact manner described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were only created recently.
OECs are not as well-known However, they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.
Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." It is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." The theory suggests that God creates original species and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a myriad of professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and permit both creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curriculum.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this effort. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed as well as on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and members. Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this are not clear but could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has achieved a number of things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. This sparked an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.
On August 6-7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science in major seminaries as well. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
